Yard Supervisor

Yard Supervisor, Elk Lake, Ontario

When you join our team as a Yard Supervisor, you will be responsible for overseeing and managing the
activities within the yard. The incumbent will ensure the yard operates
smoothly, safely, and efficiently while maintaining high standards of service
and productivity and work closely with other areas of the business to optimize operations.

What You’ll Do

  • Ensure a safe work environment in the yard department by leading by example, implementing improvements and ensuring that the team follows all policies, procedures, practices and regulations.
  • Ensure employees are adequality trained and kept up to date on current safe work procedures.
  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of yard employees, including task assignments and performance monitoring.
  • Provide leadership with timely updates and communicating information as necessary.
  • Assist with investigations and identify the root cause of problems and effectively initiate corrective action to prevent recurrence.
  • Coordinate with other departments, suppliers, and contractors to ensure the efficient transportation of materials.
  • Plan and lead weekly crew meetings and safety talks.
  • Manage the time keeping system for all yard employees, ensuring the data is accurate and complete prior to payroll deadline.
  • Manage and identify opportunities to improve productivity and reduce cost.
  • Address and resolve any operational issues or challenges that arise.
  • Foster a culture of open and respectful communication.
  • Engage and support team members to achieve excellence in all areas of the business.
  • Provide support as needed for employees, such as answering questions, coordinating PPE, and other relevant matters.
  • Foster, encourage, and support a positive team environment.

What You Offer

  • 3 years of heavy machinery operation experience is preferred.
  • Minimum 1 year of supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge and experience within lumber manufacturing and sawmill operations is an asset.
  • Bilingualism (French and English) is preferred. French is required.
  • Experience working at a sawmill or in a similar industrial environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work effectively in a highly interactive team environment.
  • Proven leadership abilities and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Desire to lead and support a talented team in a fast-paced environment, and able to function well under pressure.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced setting.
  • The ability to carry out responsibilities with minimum supervision.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • A valid Driver’s License.
