Director, Total Rewards, Burnaby, British Columbia

When you join our team as the Director, Total Rewards, you will be responsible for developing, planning, and leading the delivery of the overall compensation and benefit strategy for the company’s US and Canadian employees. This includes overseeing and leading compensation, payroll, benefits, and associated HR systems (ADP, Kronos, Shareworks, HR Data Warehouse, and HR Tableau, CSOD-Compensation). This role will take ownership and provide the strategy in delivering competitive total reward programs, as well as ensuring compliance with regulations for all payroll matters, including improvements to our associated HR systems through system feature enhancements, data integrations, and making systems more user-friendly for HR and business users. In addition, this role will identify inefficiencies and suggest solutions to streamline total rewards and payroll processes. This role will be based out of our head office based at Metrotown.

What You’ll Do


  • Recommend short and long-term compensation and benefit strategies. Provide recommendations and structure programs to maximize the value and effectiveness and ensure alignment with Interfor’s overall business strategy
  • Oversee all base, bonus, and equity compensation programs delivery
  • Advise on complex Total Rewards issues and provide recommendations
  • Contribute to the HR Leadership group and provide input and direction on HR priorities
  • Strategize and develop quarterly board materials for Compensation Committee (MRCC) meetings to drive annual recommendations for executive compensation, equity programs, and other analyses as requested by the Committee
  • Support merger and acquisition activities, including due diligence, evaluation, and integration of total rewards programs
  • Prepare the annual executive Compensation Discussion and Analysis section of the information circular
  • Oversee compensation cycles including budgeting, documentation, year-end communication, and individual compensation statements


  • Oversee data integrations with HR systems to ensure daily successful integration and analyze/fix errors where required
  • Oversee associated HR systems through understanding the business need and user feedback, and then designing, testing, and building system features to meet the business requirement
  • Determine solutions and work with system vendors for unexpected system issues
  • Lead major integration system projects to streamline business processes
  • Determine the best strategy of how to structure a system by analyzing downstream impacts and set clear guidelines for system data entry


  • Oversee the Payroll department to ensure payroll processes are functioning as expected
  • Partner with Payroll to ensure high data integrity within our ADP system
  • Advise Payroll on any complex issues with payroll processing, reconciliation, or data inputs, according to the relevant tax authorities’ payroll legislation and best practices
  • Work closely with Payroll on any payroll-related system improvement projects
  • Find solutions for the ADP GL Interface to streamline GL payroll processes


  • Oversee Benefits team to ensure benefit processes are functioning as expected and in compliance with all government regulations
  • Analyze and evaluate trends, costs, vendors, services, coverage, and options available with guidance from consultants, advisors and internal customers to determine programs best meeting the needs of the organization
  • Evaluate benefit strategy of how our programs should be designed by providing suggestions to maximize the effectiveness of these programs for employees
  • Maintain knowledge of government regulations, benefit program trends, and prevailing practices among similar organizations

What You Offer

  • 8-10 years of experience in Compensation, Benefits, Payroll, HRIS, or a related business discipline. Experience in US and Canada is preferred.
  • Professional designation in Compensation (CCP), Benefits (CEBS), Payroll (CPM), HRIS, and/or Accounting (CPA) preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Finance or Human Resources
  • Demonstrated experience working in a supervisory position, leading a team towards the achievement of goals and targets
  • Significant exposure in review processes that lead to the identification of redundancies, inaccuracies or inefficiencies
  • Demonstrated high proficiency in the use of MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint
  • Demonstrated strong analytical and reporting skills with the ability to apply statistical methods, accounting principles, and procedures
  • Ability to manage multiple and constantly changing priorities
  • Excellent interpersonal and written/oral communication skills, capable of building relationships with employees from all parts of the business, and external consultants.
  • Strong ability to work with numbers and understanding system logic
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and within a team environment
  • Strong attention to detail, and meeting the demands of internal and external clients from an administrative/support perspective
  • Highly ethical and able to deal with sensitive issues with discretion and confidentiality
  • Strong organizational skills, able to prioritize workflow and effectively manage multiple demands from a variety of sources independently
