Milestone in the Great Bear Rainforest

Forest companies and environmental groups have announced a set of joint recommendations for the Great Bear Rainforest on British Columbia’s central and north coast.

Collaboration has been the cornerstone in this significant achievement and Interfor has been proud to be involved.  This milestone represents 14 years of intense work and scientific analysis involving Interfor, Greenpeace, ForestEthics Solutions, the Sierra Club of BC, other forest companies, communities, the provincial government and First Nations. 

The recommendations support environmental goals and provide more certainty for our Coastal business. It means we can continue to provide you with high-quality products from sustainably managed forests. The recommendations are now with the provincial government and First Nations for their review and final implementation.

Interfor recently showcased our new products, existing product lines and expanded operations for international buyers at BC Wood’s 2013 Global Buyers Mission — and we followed this with a reception for our key customers.

Hundreds of buyers from more than 20 countries around the world attended the Mission, and many stopped at our booth to learn about our growth and our mill upgrades.

The reception we held after the three-day event in Whistler, BC, gave us a chance to express our appreciation to customers. We were also able to bring them up to date on recent exciting developments, including our new acquisitions, capital investments, and expanded product offerings.

Growing the China Market

China has become a growing market for Interfor’s quality lumber products – and it holds great promise with demands for new housing and urbanization.

Importers in Shanghai clearly want to learn more about North America’s lumber market dynamics, and how it could affect them. I discovered this first-hand when I spoke to importers at a session in Shanghai – there was obvious interest around what is happening in the North American lumber market.

Interfor has a lot to offer our customers in China. Sam Hui, our Director, Business Development – China, provides support for customers and identifies new opportunities in this key region. We are the third-largest supplier of Southern Yellow Pine to China, and our Port Angeles mill recently started up early to meet offshore needs.
